Embarking on a New York City adventure with your best girlfriends is an experience unlike any other, and our recent summer escapade proved just that! We dove headfirst into the city that never sleeps, indulging in its legendary culinary scene and ticking off a long list of iconic sights. Planning this highly anticipated girls’ trip to New York had been a topic of enthusiastic discussion for what felt like endless months. With all three of us sharing a profound love for good food, it was inevitable that our itinerary would evolve into an epic food tour of NYC, with sightseeing gracefully woven in between delicious bites. From classic New York staples to hidden culinary gems, our taste buds led the way through Manhattan and Brooklyn, creating a delicious tapestry of memories.

While we managed to sample an incredible array of dishes, even the most dedicated foodies have their limits (and stomach space!). I’ve included a few extra places on this list that we sadly didn’t get to visit. These establishments consistently appeared on my research shortlist, recommended countless times by locals and fellow travelers alike. They’re definitely at the top of my list for our next visit, and I hope you get to experience them if we couldn’t this time!

Where to Stay for Your NYC Girls’ Trip

Choosing the perfect accommodation in New York City can significantly enhance your trip. While highly subjective, my general advice is to pick a neighborhood that offers central access to the majority of your planned activities. For our girls’ trip, we entrusted the hotel selection to our interior designer friend, knowing she’d uncover a stylish, boutique property with character – an ideal base for exploring the city.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Refinery Hotel. It proved to be an incredibly central location for us, situated conveniently close to Times Square but just far enough to escape the constant hustle and bustle of the crowds. The hotel itself boasts a unique industrial-chic aesthetic, blending historic charm with modern comforts. Beyond its appealing design, the morning coffee served at the hotel was exceptional, providing the perfect start to our busy days of sightseeing and culinary adventures. Its prime location meant easy access to multiple subway lines, making navigation across different boroughs a breeze for our New York City explorations.

Where to Eat in New York: A Foodie’s Paradise

New York City is a global culinary hub, offering an astonishing diversity of flavors and dining experiences. As self-proclaimed foodies, our girls’ trip largely revolved around savoring the city’s incredible food scene. From iconic bagels and artisanal pastries to sophisticated dinners, here’s a comprehensive list of our top recommendations and a few highly anticipated spots for next time.

Breakfast and Pastries: Start Your Day the NYC Way

There’s no better way to kick off a day of New York adventures than with a classic breakfast or a decadent pastry. These spots offer some of the best:

  • Tompkins Bagels – An absolute must-visit for bagel enthusiasts. Their French toast bagel with strawberry cream cheese is a revelation – a sweet and savory delight that will have you dreaming about it long after your trip. It’s a unique twist on a New York classic.
    • 165 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009
  • Russ & Daughters – A quintessential Jewish appetizing store and a New York institution since 1914. Expect classic offerings like house-made latkes, rich babka, freshly baked bagels, and pillowy challah. This is primarily a grab-and-go spot, perfect for taking your authentic Jewish breakfast to a nearby park or back to your hotel.
    • 179 E Houston St, New York, NY 10002
  • Dominique Ansel Bakery – The birthplace of the famed cronut! While they have a fantastic array of pastries, the cronut is the star. Each month features a new, limited-edition flavor, so I highly recommend reserving yours online for pickup well in advance. We missed out by not reserving, and it was one of our biggest regrets! Don’t make the same mistake.
    • 189 Spring St, New York, NY 10012
  • Clinton St. Baking Co & Restaurant – Located in the charming Lower East Side, this spot is renowned for its incredible brunch. Their pancakes are legendary, and the atmosphere is lively and inviting. Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends. We arrived just before opening and were fortunate to snag the last unreserved table, but it filled up instantly. They also have a fantastic takeaway spot next door for fresh breads and pastries if you’re short on time.
    • 4 Clinton St, New York, NY 10002
  • Supermoon Bakehouse – This bakery has earned a reputation for its innovative and visually stunning croissants, donuts, and cruffins. Crowned as one of NYC’s best bakeries, it attracts long lines for a reason. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before opening; the line was already a block and a half long when we went, but every bite was worth the wait.
    • 120 Rivington St, New York, NY 10002
  • Doughnut Plant – Though we didn’t make it here, Doughnut Plant consistently appeared on multiple “best of” lists for New York City doughnuts. Their unique square doughnuts and creative flavors make it a highly anticipated stop for my next visit.
    • 379 Grand St, New York, NY 10002
  • Fabrique Bakery – A delightful Swedish bakery chain that brings a taste of Scandinavia to NYC. Their cardamom buns are incredibly fragrant and delicious – a perfect treat. I also brought home a loaf of their sourdough bread, which remained wonderfully fresh for two days, a testament to their quality.

Coffee Shops to Visit: Fueling Your NYC Exploration

Whether you need an energizing espresso or a comforting cup of chai, New York’s coffee scene offers a variety of unique spots perfect for a quick break or a leisurely chat.

  • Laughing Man Coffee Company – Located in Greenwich Village, this charming coffee shop holds a special appeal as it’s owned by none other than Hugh Jackman. More importantly, it supports coffee farm communities globally, making every cup feel good. It’s a wonderful place to grab a quality brew and feel good about your purchase.
    • 184 Duane St, New York, NY 10013
  • Devocion – A truly immersive experience for coffee lovers. This Colombian coffee shop roasts its beans right in-store, often with the process on display for patrons to view. The interior design is stunning, featuring high ceilings and natural light, making it a beautiful spot to relax. Their guava croissant paired with a perfectly crafted latte is an absolute delight.
    • 69 Grand St, Brooklyn, NY 11249
  • The Chai Spot – A wonderfully cozy and aesthetically pleasing spot dedicated to chai. It offers traditional Pakistani-style seating, creating a unique and relaxing ambiance perfect for unwinding. Be aware that as of August 2021, indoor seating often requires reservations, so plan ahead if you wish to dine inside. Outdoor seating, however, is typically available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Lunch and Dinner in NYC: A Culinary Journey

New York City’s dining scene truly comes alive during lunch and dinner, offering everything from quick, iconic bites to memorable fine dining experiences. Here are some of our favorites from our girls’ trip:

  • Joe’s Pizza – For that quintessential New York slice, look no further than Joe’s Pizza. With locations sprinkled throughout the city, finding one is usually easy. We visited the Times Square location for a quick, delicious, and authentic taste of NYC. It’s perfect for a casual lunch or a late-night snack.
    • 35 Broadway, New York, NY 10018
  • Thai Villa – Prepare for an exquisite Thai dining experience at Thai Villa. Both the Pad Kra Prao and the Soft Shell Crab Mango Salad are absolutely phenomenal, bursting with authentic flavors and fresh ingredients. The elegant ambiance makes it perfect for a relaxed dinner after a day of exploring.
    • 5 E 19th St, New York, NY 10003
  • Il Cortile – Nestled in Little Italy, Il Cortile is a charming Italian restaurant that transports you straight to Italy. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance to avoid a long waitlist, especially on weekends. We enjoyed an early dinner outdoors, which was the perfect, atmospheric end to our first day in the city. The pasta dishes are fresh, and the service is warm and inviting.
    • 125 Mulberry St, New York, NY 10013
  • The Smith – If you’re craving upscale American comfort food, The Smith is your spot. Their Mac and Cheese is arguably the best we’ve ever had – rich, creamy, and utterly satisfying. Portions here are generous, making it ideal for sharing among friends and sampling a few different dishes.
    • 1150 Broadway, New York, NY 10001
  • Red Hook Lobster Pound – For an authentic taste of Maine on butter-toasted buns, head to Red Hook Lobster Pound in Brooklyn. These lobster rolls are crafted by Maine transplants, ensuring a genuine experience. It’s a bit of a journey, but absolutely worth it for seafood lovers.

Top Activities to Do in New York: Beyond the Bites

While food was a major highlight, New York City offers an unparalleled array of attractions and activities. From iconic landmarks to unique cultural experiences, there’s something for every interest on your girls’ trip. Here’s a curated list of sights and experiences to enrich your NYC adventure:

  • Chelsea Market – More than just a food hall, Chelsea Market is a vibrant culinary and retail destination housed in a historic industrial building. You’ll find a fantastic selection of eateries, gourmet food shops, and a cool local flea market featuring unique jewelry, artisanal soaps, and art. Come hungry, as the food options are endless!
    • 75 9th Ave, New York, NY 10011
  • The High Line – An elevated park built on a historic freight rail line, located right by Chelsea Market. This makes it an ideal activity to pair with your visit to the market. The High Line offers stunning city views, unique landscaping, and public art installations.
    • TIP: There isn’t much shade along the High Line, so during summer months, I recommend going before noon or after 4 pm to avoid the intense heat. If you plan to visit on a weekend, especially during peak seasons or with ongoing restrictions, consider reserving a time slot online. Weekdays typically don’t require reservations.
    • Located from Gansevoort Street to 34th Street, New York, NY
  • Top of the Rock – An observation deck atop Rockefeller Center, offering truly breathtaking 360-degree views of the city skyline, including iconic sights like the Empire State Building and Central Park. It’s an essential experience if you’ve never seen New York from above. Tickets are required, so booking in advance is a good idea.
    • 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10112
  • Flatiron Building – An architectural marvel, this iconic triangular 22-story, 285-foot-tall building is a recognizable landmark. Its unique design and historical significance make it a popular spot for photos.
    • 175 5th Ave, New York, NY 10010
    • TIP: If you’re in the area to admire the Flatiron Building, consider dining at Thai Villa for dinner; it’s very close by and offers incredibly delicious food!
  • Brooklyn Bridge – Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge offers some of the best panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, the East River, and the Statue of Liberty. The entire walk takes approximately 45 minutes, allowing for plenty of stops for photos. To avoid the heaviest crowds, aim to go early in the morning. Be mindful of the designated pedestrian and bike lanes, and keep an eye out for cyclists, as there are many!
    • Brooklyn Bridge, New York, NY 10038
  • Visit Dumbo – Just over the Brooklyn Bridge, the Dumbo (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood is famous for its cobblestone streets and stunning views of the Manhattan Bridge framed perfectly between historic buildings – one of the most photographed streets in NYC. It’s a fantastic spot for iconic photos and offers charming boutiques and cafes.
    • 39-21 Washington St, Brooklyn, NY 11201
  • Museums – New York is home to some of the world’s most renowned museums, catering to all interests.
    • Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) – A must-visit for contemporary art lovers.
      • TIP: Enjoy free admission on Fridays from 4-8 pm, though expect larger crowds during these hours.
      • 11 W 53rd St, New York, NY 10019
    • Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) – One of the largest and finest art museums in the world, with collections spanning global art history.

    • TIP: For a truly memorable experience, especially for a girls’ trip or a romantic outing, consider utilizing one of the many picnic delivery services in NYC. These services deliver pre-made picnic baskets for 2-4 people to prearranged locations within Central Park, or you can pick them up. Check out PerfectPicnicNYC for a curated picnic experience.
  • The Mysterious Bookshop – This hidden gem might not appeal to everyone, but if you’re a fan of mystery or thriller books, it’s an absolute treasure trove. It’s an incredibly charming, cozy little bookshop, perfect for losing yourself among the shelves and discovering a new favorite read.
    • 58 Warren St, New York, New York
  • Friends Apartment – For fans of the iconic TV show, a quick stop at the exterior of the “Friends” apartment building is a fun photo opportunity if you happen to be in Greenwich Village.
    • 90 Bedford St, New York, NY 10014
  • Seinfeld Tom’s Restaurant – Another pop culture landmark, Tom’s Restaurant gained fame as the exterior of Monk’s Diner in “Seinfeld.” My husband and I visited nine years ago on a previous trip, so we skipped it this time. Note that while the exterior is instantly recognizable, the inside of the restaurant doesn’t resemble the show’s set; it’s primarily for an exterior photo opportunity.

Essential Tips for Riding the NYC Subway

Navigating New York City efficiently often means relying on its extensive subway system. It’s the quickest and most cost-effective way to get around, especially when you’re covering a lot of ground on a busy girls’ trip. Here are some key tips to make your subway experience smooth and stress-free:

  • Invest in the 7-Day Unlimited MetroCard – Chances are you’ll be hopping on and off the subway frequently throughout your visit. If you anticipate taking 12 or more rides within a week, this card pays for itself, offering unlimited travel on both subway and local buses. It’s an excellent value for a weekend getaway or longer. For those who prefer single rides, many newer subway stations now feature OMNY readers, allowing you to simply tap your credit card or use Apple Pay directly at the turnstile, bypassing the need for a physical MetroCard kiosk.
  • Google Maps is Your Best Friend – While other navigation apps exist, we found Google Maps to be incredibly reliable for planning subway routes. It provides real-time train schedules, identifies the fastest routes, and helps you understand transfers. We only got lost once, and that was entirely our own fault for not paying close enough attention! Citymapper is another highly recommended app that offers similar functionality and is popular among locals.
  • Understand Uptown, Midtown, and Downtown – Knowing these directional terms is crucial for navigating the subway and the city in general.
    • Uptown refers to anything north of 59th Street.
    • Midtown encompasses the area between 59th Street and 14th Street.
    • Downtown designates anything south of 14th Street.

Trains are typically labeled with their destination (e.g., “Uptown & The Bronx” or “Downtown & Brooklyn”), so understanding these zones will help you quickly identify the correct platform and direction.

  • Mind the Gap & Rush Hour – Always “mind the gap” when entering and exiting trains. During peak rush hours (roughly 7-9 AM and 5-7 PM on weekdays), trains can be extremely crowded. If possible, try to plan your travel during off-peak times for a more comfortable experience.
  • Subway Etiquette – New Yorkers are known for their fast pace. Move quickly through turnstiles, don’t block doors, and offer seats to those who might need them more. While riding, keep your belongings close and be aware of your surroundings.
